What Does it Mean to Be a Mother

The Meaning of Mother
Being a mother is the most fulfilling and meaningful experiences known to mankind. Its the meaning of life. Its the meaning of unconditional love. It can never be understood in its entirety; just like life. Can you understand the entire meaning of your existence? Its beyond your comprehension. However, you do acknowledge and appreciate your existence.
Prior to Motherhood
In our lifetime, there may be numerous occasions when we may have spent time with children. We may have adored our newborn nieces and nephews. These experiences are profound. However, the experience of being a mother cannot be matched. Its a transformation from within. It can only be experienced. A heartfelt feeling that will literally take your breath away.
Prior to being a mother; we may look at another mother and wonder how a mother can love a child so much. We may wonder how love of such magnitude can ever exist. How can a mother be willing to compromise so much for a child. How can a mother`s heart be persuaded so quickly. Does that not take the fine hand of time. How are these feelings of compassion and love ever possible. Are they rational feelings or is it just an infatuation. Can it be that a mother is just in love with the thought of being a mother.
At other times, we may be puzzled by the financial responsibilities of being a mother. Motherhood may seem like a luxury that consumes much of our time and energy. We may think to ourselves that there are many things that we would rather do. How can we care for a child with so much devotion. We may be worried about the compromises in our career and in our relationships. Can we sustain these important aspects of our life after having a child. It may seem as if life is difficult as it is in the present moment. A child may appear to further complicate current matters. A woman of child bearing age may wonder if there will ever be a perfect time to have a child. To answer that question; there may never be a perfect time. Rest assured, however, that things in the universe will be aligned in such a way that it will be perfect. We should not concern ourselves with how exactly this happens. We just have to believe that it will happen.
When a Mother is Born
Trust me when I say that these questions are inconsequential and are further from the truth. When we become a mother we no longer question these things with such significance. It is not because an angel has answered these questions for us. It is not because we no longer have time for such complicated questions. Instead, questions of such nature are inconsequential. Questions seize to exist at this time.
Being a mother makes each moment in your life feel more significant and longer. Its love of this magnitude that ensures that your life does not just flash by. It ensures that each moment count. It ensures that we embody and live within each moment of life. As a mother; we live and relive these memories to a point that these moments in time appear to have a life of its own. Its a life within a life. Its your life and your child`s life within you. And they both exist in perfect harmony.
Our thoughts and our intentions have changed. We have transformed into a mother through our child. A transformation that embodies the body, mind and soul. When one becomes a mother; one is overwhelmed with genuine joy and happiness. A deep rooted feeling that cannot be contained within ourselves. It overflows and feels like it can fill an entire universe and beyond with positive energy. Its nothing like we have ever experienced before.
We may have fears, but these fears can`t hold a light to the happiness of motherhood. Our feelings are predominantly about the joy of motherhood. When we become a mother; it becomes a transformational change as though a lifelong longing has finally been fulfilled. However, its remarkable how this longing never existed prior to becoming a mother. A revelation that surprises mothers in many ways. Mothers begin to discover themselves in ways that they never thought possible. Its as if the impossible is suddenly possible.
A mother grows with the child and forms wings of her own. A mother becomes a guardian angel for the child. A strength a child consciously realizes over the course of time. A mother is ecstatic about little things that would otherwise bore the rest of the world. For example, a mother would be the most touched by their child`s first smile. When a child first learns to crawl. When a child first calls her mother. And there is no joy than that of a child`s first kiss. A child`s little hugs and giggles can melt the heart of most stern mothers.
Being a mother becomes a part of our being. Its no longer a question that we have of how. It is what it is. It exists in nature. We come to know that our love to be of the most purest and most unconditional quality. A love that will survive the test of time and will transcend barriers. A love that will grow and be stronger with time. A love that lingers in our heart long after the last breath of our life. A love of this kind has existed for centuries. But, there is no love that can ever exist that is greater than the love of a mother for her child.
A Mother's Love for her Child
Its heartening to know that love of such magnitude can exist in this world. The very thought of its existence can give us so much to believe in. And because of this love the world becomes more beautiful to us and to those whom we love. We begin to see the world through a child`s eyes with excitement for the little wonders of life. We appreciate the little things. We share laughter when a child learns to build a tower of building blocks. We become as one with the child. A bond that is inseparable. A mother has maternal instincts that science cannot explain. These are the works of a genius. We do not question these things. We know that mother somehow knows.
The relationship between a mother and a child is one of the most beautiful and sacred relationships that can exist in this world. A relationship that can be the very definition of the meaning of life. Its absolutely remarkable the strength that love can have for a mother and for her child. And so when a mother leaves our physical presence and enters into a new world; it may feel as if we have lost the meaning of life. That we may have lost the very essence of our being.
Rest assured, that a mothers love is not always felt only in her presence. A mothers love is part of our being. Its part of our existence. A mother`s presence is felt in every part of our being. Its in our thoughts. Its in our past. Its in our DNA (genetic material). Its in our children. Its in our present reality. A mother`s presence is felt all through life and it will guide us well into the future. A mothers love is a legacy on its own right and will live for many years to come.
A mothers love I can never explain. It is part of my being. Its inseparable from my soul. For everyone, who has lost their mother. That is, in its physical tangible form. Please know that she will always be in your intangible thoughts. As such, it would be absurd to bid farewell to an intrinsic part of your being.
What does it mean then to be a mother. To show unconditional love. A love we can only understand through the many ways in which its expressed in our lives and in the lives of many people around us. We can only see the outcomes of a mothers love in many facets of our lives. We can see it in ourselves as children. We can acknowledge it in our personalities and in the way we raise our children. We can appreciate the strength that a mothers love has given us in overcoming the many struggles of life. We can see it in our own love for our children. We can see it all around us. However, we can never truly understand the source of this profound love. It exists in our world. And its beautiful.

Very beautifully written, I totally concur with your sentiments. Being a mother myself, I can readily agree when you said, "Being a mother becomes a part of our being. Its no longer a question that we have of how. It is what it is." Voted up, interesting.

Thanks for SHARING:)
Heart Touching Hub...I loved it!!
What a great tribute to motherhood. To me the most important characteristic is unconditional love. Voting this Up and Beautiful.
This is beautiful, and so very true. I was a young mother - 20 - but I had nieces and nephews and babysat from the time I was 10. I loved each of them so much, but when I had my son then my daughter, I understood the difference. I had had those questions of "How can I love a baby any more than I love my niece/nephew." But, it is completely different and wonderful. It is not something that can be explained. We can only experience the joys of motherhood.
You also speak of how mothers aren't just there physically, they are with us always. That is true, too. I lost my mother 2 years ago, and I feel her as strongly now as I did when she was with me. You have done a wonderful job of capturing motherhood and a mother's love. Votes and shared! :-)
Being a man. I witnessed a very loving relationship between a mother and her two year old two weeks ago. Something i had never seen so intense before. It was an awesome experience...

Great hub thanks for sharing. I believe unconditional love is such a hard thing to give as human beings. However I do try to give my kids love that is mindful, compassionate, empathetic, and nonjudgmental. I want them to know I love them despite their choices but I also want them to know the choices they make, make them. Thanks again hot this hub on mothering.
